Homework

There is a lot of debate in the education world about homework. Is it good or is it bad? I have been doing some research and find the debate interesting. For me personally I try to assign HW that can be done individually so that our class time can be used to learn from one another. However, I feel that HW should be kept to a minimum because I want my students to be able to play in the sun, get exercise, socialize, and spend time with their family. In other words, I want my students to live so that they can experience the world and come to class with experiences to share and learn from.

I want to know what you think about HW. Please cut and paste the questions below to your response and answer. Your responses will help me become a better teacher, so be honest and thoughtful. Thanks!

  • What types of HW have been asked to do is Social Studies and Langauge Arts?
  • Do you usually do your HW? If yes, when where, how, and why? If not, why not?
  • What are some HW tasks that you have found intersting and/or useful?
  • What do you do outside of school that relates to SS or LA?

* What types of HW have been asked to do is Social Studies and Langauge Arts?
-In Social studie we have been assigned mainly varying projects and note taking based on reading. In language arts we have been assigneed more writing such as essays and we have been learning skills that help in writing and helping in real life. The type of work varies directly.
* Do you usually do your HW? If yes, when where, how, and why? If not, why not?
-Yes, I do my homework. After I come home I relax, have a snack, go on facebook for a few minutes and then I start. I evaluate what homework is due now and which one is the hardest. I usually start with LA and SS then science and then math. Then in betweeen each subject assignment I take a short break and relax before starting off again. If I have a project due, I do the first draft, or first try one day. Then slowly edit it. Next couple of days I make a second draft. Then I make the last draft. Then on the last day, I edit it with new eyes,,a fter having peer edited.
* What are some HW tasks that you have found intersting and/or useful?
-I found it interesting when we learned about life skills like taking notes and writing resumes. I also enjoyed writing essays about subjects we can all relate to such as why do people lie.
* What do you do outside of school that relates to SS or LA?
-Outside of school what do I do that relates to those subjects. I personally want to grow up to be a writer so I enjoy writing pieces creatively at home and use the six traits of writing and edit it with peers. Things I do that relate to SS are:......I make analogies to events we learned about and use knowledge from WW1 to make choices and judgements.

Is Homework any good:
To a certain extent. I think a certain amount of homework and a certain type is good. I think a reasonable amount of interactive homework is very good. I however think that too much repetitive wasteful homework does not help it just bores us and makes the sbject alienated. So basically, interesting, short, meaningful homework.

-What types of HW have been asked to do is Social Studies and Langauge Arts?

Well, in Social Studies, we are assigned note-taking after reading a section in our text books. We also do different projects. In Languague Atrts, we are also assigned to do projects and essays. We also read books and explain how the plot, setting, etc. is protrayed throughout the book.

-Do you usually do your HW? If yes, when where, how, and why? If not, why not?

I do usually do my homework. I do in my room at home or in the living room. I do it because if i don't, it'll lower my grade and I'll get in trouble.

-What are some HW tasks that you have found intersting and/or useful?

I found the note-taking assignments usefull because when we use have a project on that assignment, I can just instantly look at my notes instead of researching it.

-What do you do outside of school that relates to SS or LA?

Homework or blog.

-What types of HW have been asked to do in SS and LA?

SS: note taking, projects, blogs, reading. After taking notes, labeling maps, and answering questions, at the end of each text book chapter, we usually get a project to sum it up.

LA: We write essays, read books and take notes on it, write blog responses, and do activities related to our books (character sketches, etc...)

-Do you usually do your HW? If yes, when, where, how, and why? If not, why not?

I usually do my homework, yes.
WHEN: I try to do my hw the day it's assigned after my activities for the day. If it's a project, i do a little of it each day until the final day.
WHERE: I do my homework usually at home. That is where I can use my laptop, and i concentrate most there as well.
HOW: I start with the homework that is due the next day, if I hadn't done it before, and then i go subject by subject, checking the assignments off as i get them done in my agenda. I do my hw usually on the computer, which I find to be much neater and more efficient.
WHY: I do my hw to earn good grades. I also do my hw because I'm interested in what I'm learning about. There's more reasons... but those are the main ones.

-What are some hw tasks that you have found intersting and/ or useful?

I never knew the different note-taking methods, and those help me so much. I also like blog responses because we can "learn off each other". Almost every assignment is quite useful.

-What do you do ouside of school that relates to SS or LA?

writing, reading, learning in general... almost everything is related to everything. Math is related to science which is related to ss which is related to la which is related to science which is related to mathh and so on.... It's a whole bond of relationships... that's why it is so important to learn.

• What types of HW have been asked to do in Social Studies and Language Arts?
In Social Studies we have bean asked to take do note taking homework, by taking notes on passages we have read in our books. This helps me personally because I can check if I read the passage thoroughly and understand it. I do not consider our regular social studies homework busy work; when I do this homework I learn a lot.
• Do you usually do your HW? If yes, when where, how, and why? If not, why not?
I usually do my homework, unless I forget. I do my homework in my room; because it is a quiet place were I can concentrate. When I get home I eat a small snack, drink and I get started. I do my homework the order I get my classes in, and often the day before it is due (unless it’s a project, then I work on it everyday). I do my homework because I care about my grades I often learn doing my homework and it makes it easier if we have a test.
• What are some HW tasks that you have found interesting and/or useful?
I found writing on the blog very interesting and useful, because often blog questions make is relate to real life; on of my favorite questions of the blog was ‘why do civilized people kill?’ we were able to relate with topic that we learned in class (WWI) and in real life (terrorism).
• What do you do outside of school that relates to SS or LA?
Outside of school I usually look over the blog but things that relate to my classes are, that when I see something beautiful I have sometimes a tendency to write it down as well as I can. In SS I usually do archeological things, I find very cool rocks often and then I try to find out where it’s from, and how old it is?
• Is homework good?
I think homework is very useful we can learn a lot of it, however like Omar said I think that too much homework is just ineffective because students will get bored of it… they will hate the teacher, and will forget to do it because it is so much. I think a decent amount of homework were we can learn from.

1. What types of HW have been asked to do in Social Studies and Language Arts?

In SS we have usually been assigned to taking notes, sec rev. at the end of each chapter, labeling maps, reading chapters, and some projects. As for LA, we are usually assigned to reading, taking notes, finding their themes and such, and writing essays.

2. Do you usually do you HW? If yes, when, where, how, and why? If not, why not?

Yes I do usually do my homework. I would usually do my homework the day that it is assigned, but if I can't finish, I find the time to do it the next day before it is due. Where do I find it most satisfying? My computer. I like the computer because, I can type things a lot faster and it is neater than my handwriting. It also helps because it is not time consuming. I start out with Social Studies because it is longest/hardest for me to get done. I then move on to math, and then on to Language Arts because it is easiest for me. WHY? Because, when I start out with the hardest stuff work, like SS, then it feels as if I have accomplished something and can move on to something a little easier instead. If I start out with the smaller things, than I still have a long way to go before finishing everything I have.

3. What are some HW tasks that you have found interesting and/or useful?

I found that outlining my homework can be very useful for me. It is more organized and it is in different sections so I wouldn't get confused. Other methods like RTU notes, webs, or margin notes don't suit me as much as notes. The reason why is because back at my old school, we use to take notes by outlining the chapters (despite the fact they were 6-10 pages long). I found them most interesting and helpful for me.

4. What do you do outside of school that relates to SS or LA?

At home, I like to research varies amounts of different things and/or subjects just for the fun of it. I outline them and look them over; trying to understand what it has to say. Other times, I sit down and write essays or stories or look on the blog to see what it has to say.

Homework reflects how you will go on in life. If you do the homework and understand the concept of it then you'll move on in life. If you don't do the homework and won't understand it, then you will be stuck in a crisis for the rest of your life. Homework reviews and teaches you everything you've learned and what you're going to learn. I agree with Omar and Stephan. Too much homework causes stress and you'll forget everything you've learned. Too little homework will cause you to take advantage of the teacher until the point that there is not homework. Homework should have a meaning to it, not BUSY WORK! If it is just being thrown at us like a bunch of garbage, then all its going to do is cram a bunch of nonsense in our heads, and when the time has come for a test or a quiz, nothing will make sense. All I am trying to say is that, homework has to have a meaning to everything and it can’t be to the point where homework is nothing. My personal opinion is that sometimes we have homework that is a little overwhelming. Just a little.

-What types of HW have been asked to do is Social Studies and Langauge Arts?
We have been asked to work on our note-taking strategies for SS and projects. For LA we have been asigned to read Karoo Boy, Shabanu, and do activities based on the novels.

-Do you usually do your HW? If yes, when where, how, and why? If not, why not?
I usually do my HW at home, after extra curricular activities at my study table in my bedroom. I do my HW because I like getting good grades. Who doesnt? Sometimes I dont do my HW for different reasons. My laptop is in my study table and I get distracet with MSN, my music and TV shows online. I am also very forgettful so I leave my HW at school or I forget to read my planner.

-What are some HW tasks that you have found intersting and/or useful?
I found the journal really cool and interesting, although very time-consuming but it was worth it. I enjoyed also LA activities like the poem writing or other things. The WWI project I could do a poster with, was great because I display well what I learned with posters and I get good grades with them.

-What do you do outside of school that relates to SS or LA?
I read a lot, I speak English, I watch documentaries and go to museums (not many in DKR). There are really good museums in Madrid. Everyone go to Spain!

I think HW helps with what you learned at school, so yes, it is good. Like everything, excesive HW isnt good, so normal quantities should be given by the teachers, and NEVER busywork. I am pro HW because it helps the teacher and the student.

-Yes, i usually do my homework.
When=i try to do my HW the day i get it. but i have a lot i do it the night before the class.
Where= I mostly do my HW at my house but sometimes Julia and i do your HW together.
How= Well i usally do my Hw by sitting down, reading directions and doing it. But sometimes i need help so i ask my parents or Julia.
Why= i do my HW to make good grades. and to great in a good college. to have a good, successful life you have to do good in school.
* What are some HW tasks that you have found interesting and/or useful?
-i think RTU notes are really helpful i think that i will use these for a long time in my school life.
* What do you do outside of school that relates to SS or LA?
- Whenever i read i think about the different literary devices and pick them out and use them. i think you have really helped me read a book.

* What types of Hw have we been asked to do in Social Studies and Language Arts?
-In Social Studies we have read sections in the textbook and have taken notes that vary according to our preferance. These notes are accompanied by a map that we colour and fill out the locations. We usually wrap up the chapter with a project. We are assigned homework that helps magnify our understanding of the project (like the PTSD notes). In Language Arts, we are assigned homework that furthers our writing and creativity (essays). We also interact with books through notes and activites. In Karoo Boy we did margin notes and in Shabanu we did notes and the character sketch.
* Do you usually do your HW? If yes, when, where, how, and why?
-Yes, I usually do my homework. After I come home I eat, and I read a little, then I start. I start with the homework that takes the most effort and is the most time consuming. I do this so I can take my time and I wont be rushed into not doing a bad job. After I finish that, I start on the homework that I can finish quickly. If I cant finish everything, I wake up really early in the morning then finish the HW in my room. I usualy do homework in the living room, anywhere quiet will do. I do homework because I care about my grades and I know that homework is beneficial to my eduaction because it is like revision for tests and quizzes. Even if Im exausted and I feel like doing homework is tedious, I do it anyway because I know it will benefit me in the long run.
*What are some HW tasks that you have found interesting and/or usuful?
- The essays let us have freedom in what we want to write. Like in the Karoo Boy essay, we got to pick out own thesis. The essays give us a chance to feel inspired to write, and to feel passionate about our subject matter. The Why Do People Lie essay connected to real life, and it gave us a chance to be able to relate and form speculations and express voice. We are also able to interact with our peers to exchange ideas and give helpful critisism. I think that the one current flaw with the essays that we do, is that it can only be five paragraphs. I hope that once you feel everyone has a grasp on the standard essay format, we can explore longer and more creative essay styles.
A HW assignment that I have really enjoyed doing was the journal. It mixed Social Studies with Language Arts in a way that made it easy to feel free to write in a perspective of someone else. The journal was long, but it gave us a chance to use our imaginations. It was like writing a book; it could be as long as you wanted and you could add many personal details about your character. This project also strengthened our understanding about how WWI affected people. The textbook is all well and fine but it is numbers and figures and death tolls that you cant really relate to. Involving Language Arts deepend our perspective.
* What do you do outside of school that relates to SS or LA?
- Something I do outside of school that relates to LA is that I write. The margin notes that we have done when we were reading Karoo Boy further developed my knowledge of literary devices that I could use. For SS... the work that we had done relating to WWI has interested me and I am reading All Quiet on the Western Front. From what I have read, it is really good and the work that we have done in SS allows me to understand all the major historical events that occur.

*Is homework good?
I think that homework is good but in moderation. Homework should be revision and work that helps us understand and absorb the lesson. It shouldnt be busy work that we feel obliged to do because we have to, then we would forget what we did as soon as we finished the HW. Homework should be interesting and not overly stressfull

- What types of HW have been asked to do is Social Studies and Langauge Arts?

Types of homework we have been asked to do in socialstudies are note taking on what we are learning, projects, diagrams, sheets, blog responses or any assignment that helps us learn.

In language arts we have homework such as essays and writing assignments. We usually read a book and take notes on that or do charactermaps or projects usually on a plot of a book we have read.

- Do you usually do your HW? If yes, when where, how, and why? If not, why not?

Yes, I usually do my homework, at least I try to finish them all, if I don't, it's usually because I forget to write it in my agenda, I'm sick or I don't have the time because of other homework in other subject.
I mostly do my homework after I eat when I get home in my room. I usually do my homework with music or while the I'm on the computer and I do my homework because I want a good grade.

- What are some HW tasks that you have found intersting and/or useful?

I think homework that is useful is the notetaking or any assignment with answering questions because then you can check how much you have acquired and learned.

What do you do outside of school that relates to SS or LA?

- What I do outside school that relates to LA is reading. Although I normally don't have much time to read, I try to read more and learn new vocabulary from my readings. I also like to watch olden days movies and so I learn how life was centuries ago.

- Is homework good?
I think homework is good that is limited on how much you get on a regular. Otherwise it is good with homework that is easy, quick, and easy to learn from. Homework that takes the hole night to do isnt good because you need freetime to be social with friends and family and have some freetime.

1) In Social Studies we had to do projects, and our teacher assigned reading assignments from our
Social Studies book and make notes based on the reading. For example, we just read a whole chapter in our Social Studies book about WW1.
We also had to awnser questions on the blog.
in Language Arts we also received projects to do, and we had to write essays. For example we just finished an essay talking about the book Karoo boy, which we just read. as I said we have already read two books.

2) I do always my homework, but sometimes I don't hand it in on time. I do my homework at home after school and I do it alone, sometimes my mother helps me out or a friend. I do my homework, because otherwise my teacher and my parents would get mad at me.

3) In Language Arts for the warm up our teacher gives us tasks that learn us several things. For example, during a warm up task i learned how to take notes, which is very useful.

4) The warm ups relate to my life outside of school, because I sometimes use the techniques our teacher learned us during the warm ups.

* What types of HW have been asked to do is Social Studies and Langauge Arts?

For LA, most of the homework relates to the novel we are reading. It includes taking notes in or on a different paper to help us understand the book. With projects, the homework varies. Most of the time, you don't give us home work for projects, you just assume that it will be done by the due date. In SS, most of the homework is also taking notes. We take notes on chapters we read in the SS book. We also have to answer the questions at the end. As Semhar said, at the end of a chapter, we do a project. Sometimes even during a chapter we do small projects.

* Do you usually do your HW? If yes, when, where, how, and why? If not, why not?

I usually do my homework. Mostly every day, I have activities that keep me past 3. So, on some days I come home at 8.30 (badminton). I eat dinner and start my homework. I do it in my room either on my desk or on my bed. I don't really understand the "how" part of the question. My best guess is what order, like Semhar put, I start with the hardest first. I do it, because if I don't, it lowers my grade. I'm sorry, but if I had the choice and it wouldn't affect my grade, I would choose to not do it. I guess that it is a necessity, and if you didn't do it, you would be very far behind. I'm contradicting myself aren't I! Sorry!

* What are some HW tasks that you have found intersting and/or useful?

I find it very fun when we take notes in the book. I really feel like I connect with the text, because I can express myself. And, in class, I couldn't do that, because there are so many things to say, it wouldn't fit in 2 hours!

* What do you do outside of school that relates to SS or LA?

For LA, I read - a LOT. I love to read, and it always is so sad when you can't check out books during the summer! I don't do much out of school that relates to SS. For WWI, I would look at topics more in-depth on wikipedia.

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

I think that an excessive amount of homework is unnecessary (such as busy-work). I think that what really counts is the overall knowledge, and how you get that depends on your style. What I find a nuisance is filling out homework that I already know. It is good to review, but at a certain extent, it isn't beneficial.

1. What types of HW have been asked to do is Social Studies and Langauge Arts?

In SS, we have mainly been asked to read parts of the textbook and projects, which i have thought have been interesting. we also have to finish notes that we took in class or from movies.
In LA, we have to read books and take notes.we also have to write essays that contain about 3 drafts each

2.Do you usually do your HW? If yes, when where, how, and why? If not, why not?

yes, i do my hw at home. it also depends what kind of activities i have after school, but i usually do it at home. i come home and i let my head rest then i do my hw. it also greatly depends on the amount of hw we have. if we have very little homework, i usually do it quickly. but if we have loads of homework, i usually cant concentrate that good because i just came home and my time is very little because i have to eat and sleep. i also have swedish school and that contains a lot of hw which is very annoying and hard.

3. What are some HW tasks that you have found intersting and/or useful?

i find this skill with writing in the book very useful. the hall passes are also life savers for me :D also, learning how to take notes and having a teacher to explain to us how to write an expository essay was extra helpful.

4. What do you do outside of school that relates to SS or LA?

well, i read a lot of history books in english and they contain a lot of new vocabulary that i use in school.

HW can be good and bad. for me, i dont really see the point of hw. i think this becuse we just come home from school, our brains full with new information then we have to start studying again. i think that children should have some free time also, not always to hang over a school book.

Nicolas M. said...

I agree with rachel. the only homework children should get are reading books, like Karoo Boy, and studying for tests

•What types of HW have been asked to do in Social Studies and Langauge Arts?
We have done blog responses, readings, essay and other writing assignments in both SS and LA.

•Do you usually do your HW? If yes, when, where, how, and why? If not, why not?
Yes, I (usually) do my homework. But sometimes I forget. I do my HW after dinner, which I eat at six or sometimes seven (six is the usual time in Sweden). I do my HW on the diner table since my own desk often is to full with stuff to even lean your arms on. To answer how I do my HW, well, I often just do it in the normal way. If we for example have an essay for HW, I type it on the computer, since my handwriting isn't that good. I do my HW because I want to have good grades, to success in school and get a good job.

•What are some HW tasks that you have found intersting and/or useful?
I liked it when we got to read "Karoo Boy" as HW. I ejoyed it since I like reading very much. Blog responses are also fun to do, but I can't really put my finger on why. We have also had HW that involve skills such as how to write a formal job letter, and how to write an instruction manual or recipe. That is useful later in life.

•What do you do outside of school that relates to SS or LA?
I think that I don't do very much that relates to SS or LA outside school. I do math very often, for example when I am in a grocery store. But I don't really do anything that have to do with the things that I learn in SS and LA. I store the knowledge in my head for class, but I don't know if I do anything that relates to for example WWII. But I think that writing essays will now will make it easier to write essays in my future job, which will make me succeed.
