How are women in Pakistan treated?

Do your own research: articles, videos, blog, etc. and find out about women in Pakistan. Then make a comment and leave a website or source for us to look at. Please ask and answer each other questions.

It might be a good idea to see how women in Senegal or your own country are treated and do a comparison.

Her name is Aisha i COPY PASTED THIS FROM Yout tube

Narrated 'Aisha:that the Prophet married me when I was six years old and he consummated his marriage when I was nine years old. Bukhari 7. 62. 64
Narrated 'Aisha:
I used to play with the dolls in the presence of the Prophet, and my girl friends also used to play with me. When Allah's Apostle used to enter (my dwelling place) they used to hide themselves, but the Prophet would call them to join and play with me. (The playing with the dolls and similar images is forbidden, but it was allowed for 'Aisha at that time, as she was a little girl, not yet reached the age of puberty.) (Fateh-al-Bari page 143, Vol.13) Bukhari 8. 73.151

Muslim (4:2127) - Muhammad struck his favorite wife, Aisha, in the chest one evening when she left the house without his permission. Aisha narrates, "He struck me on the chest which caused me pain."

This upsets me. A lot. To think that this could be my own mother, or my friend's mom, or for that matter, me. Me. I can not imagine how cruel someone could be to wish these horrid, horrid things on people, not only women really. Just the thought of this is pathetic and extremely wrong to its greatest extent.
I'm thinking about now the bullies, or the men that torture these innocent women, and girls. How insane can people get? First of all, how insane is the Pakistani government to not allow women to divorce even if they are being physically and probably verbally abused. There's nothing to say really. I mean no one would say, "oh, that's normal." It's just not humane and something that anyone would every want. I have absolutely nothing to say. I'm shocked and scared and worried and extremely sad for these women that experience this every day, every moment of their lives.
In this video that I saw, this little girl was crying her eyes out. She was so, so, so, so scared just thinking about her husband. A like 8 year old girl has a husband. Even that is mind-blowing. I would be terrified to even look at this man. If thinking of him and talking about him made her cry, I would be terrified to even look at this man if I were her.
So to wrap the question up, women in Pakistan are treated horribly. Horribly horrible. I'm sorry that I'm ranting on about this, I'm just so deeply sad and scared for these females. This is the 21st century and it should not ever be happening. Ever. Oh wow. I'm talking to much, I just can express my feelings enough. I mean this is sick and pathetic and insane and so so so sad.
Comparing this to my style of living, women divorce their husbands every day, and husbands wouldn't dare hurt or even verbally hurt their wives. They nurture and support them. Couples are in love. There is an obvious difference in how people live in these two cultures.
What is happening is sick and wrong and should not be happening. I hope there is a women's liberation organization somewhere because it is an idea and situation that is downplayed and should be solved quickly. That is what I have to say, but I could keep rambling on about this issue. It is absolutely inhumane.

I saw a video on youtube about violence against women in pakistan and the statistics were that at least 50 persent of married women were beaten kicked, punched and abused by their husbands. An average of 9 women are killed daily. This is only what has been actually reported by the women, and most are afriad for their lives, imagine all those stories that are not reported. i also saw a vidio of a 12 YEAR OLD girl that was beaten and had severe knife injuries by her husband. ONLY TWELVE. thats younger than most people in our class. imagine being married and having to grow up so fast like that. Raping crimes result in the VICTIM being imprisiond, lashed or stoned to death. if a woman refuses an arranged marrage her father can acuse her of adultry and she would be severly punished, or her own father could kill her. If a woman reports to the police, some of the police will rape her thamselves because they proclaim that she is a "shamed woman". There was a story of a girl who was ganged raped. she got pregnant and her family advised her to KILL HERSELF because they said she was shaming the family. Imagine! if your own family told you to kill yourself because of somthing that someone else did to you? Also, reports of rape are not taken seriously because she has to have at least more male witnesess, and they have to be MALE and MUSLIM. or, the judge would say that a woman would use rape as an exuse for adultury and she would be imprisioned for years, lashed, or stoned to death. Especially in the more rural places in pakistan. these documentaries and slideshows really made me sick. When i saw all the acid and burnig wounds i litrally started crying. I just dont understand! and children are the worst victims (girls and boys) because no one believes what they say. To say somehting on Jonathans comment today, i do agree that maybe men are also forced to do things that they dont want to do. (arranged marriage). or they could have alot of preassure from thier femily. but no matter what, it is always harder for the women. not only do they have no control over their prefrences, but also their bodies and socail structure. My discussion question is: do you think that the unfair conditions for women are only concentrated of middle east and Islamic countries?
I think that it is milder in some countries than others, or maybe more subtle. for example, views that women should be owned and controlled also count. ( doesnt have to be physical)
I would be interested in people's responses, the slideshows i watched really affected me. oh, also another question. Why do you think that some men in Pakistan do this? I think it might be a chain of some sort.

Unknown said...

To answer nicolas's question, i dont think that the whole word just watches whats going on, there are some organizations who help, not enough obviously. I also think that people are confronted with horrible news and they look the other way becaouse their not ready or strong enough to confront it. or they are so absorbed in their own problems that they dont notice what goes on around them. This is why the media plays such a big part in our lives, i think that more news should be focoused in this kind of matirial other than more trival stuff such as celebrities etc....
p.s
we lived in pakistan for 4 years and my mum went to afghanistan every other week, I'll interveiw her when she gets home.

I found this article on the internet.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/721313.stm

Musharraf promises end to Pakistan abuses

The Pakistani military ruler, General Pervez Musharraf, has promised to tackle human rights abuses.

Opening a two-day convention in Islamabad, General Musharraf said he wanted to ensure that the rights and freedom of every Pakistani were guaranteed.

He said the practice of killing of women for supposed infringements of male pride had no place in religion or law, and would be treated as murder.

Correspondents say women in Pakistan can be killed for the flimsiest of reasons, such as talking to a man other than a male relative.

Correspondents say police and the courts often refuse to take action in such cases. General Musharraf also promised to end child labour and to halt abuses of controversial blasphemy laws, which have led to religious minorities being jailed for allegedly defaming Islam.

To clearify what this article is trying to say is that an army general with the name Musharraf is trying to guarantee the rights and freedom for every Pakistani-which would as well include women and children. He said that killing of women for no real reason and had no place in religion and law.

the article also states that women can be killed for the slightest reason, such as talking to another man that is not a relative, or a really close friend for example.

The general said that correspondents stated that the police and the courts refuses not take any actions in such cases of practices of killing women in Pakistan. He also stated that he'd promise to end child labor.

I think the situation of women and children is really horible, as it stated at the end of wilson's article from youtube. I mean, getting hit for not asking permission if they could go outside or somewhere. Even i have more freedom than the women in Pakistan!!I've been told some women are not even allowed to go outside their homes without a husband or male realitve. I think it is the same in Pakistan. I don't think the men of a family should have total control of every single thing, (I think the koran even states that women should have freedom and inheritence and such) Child labor i'm pretty sure there is plenty of, many children making carpets without enough food and without any payment. That is really sad. I could never imagine my life controled by my husband, or never be able to do anything without asking for permission. I think the government of Pakistan should really realize that this has to stop. I'm sure there are some people and organizations that are aware of this crisis/conflict but it is very hard to solve.

Question: If you were a woman Pakistani, how would you act, would you stand up for yourself despite punishment or obey the men? (if you're guy just think how you'd do if u were a woman =))

to answer semhar's question,

I think it only affects muslim/ middle east countries because, in islam, it's in their culture that the men are the powerful and the ones who are supposed to have a job and take care of family buisness and such. The reason why i don't think it's the same in christian countries is because, first, the laws states that every individual has the right of freedom and speech (mostly christian countries such as in europe or america) and can divorce and such. Secondly, I think christian countries have more freedom and equal rights than the men.

to answer johannas question:

i would want to stand up for myself, but it would depend what kind of man he was. also, religion i think plays a big role in this. llike youre not aloud to say something, or else they will punish you. its horrible, but you cannot always change everything, but this, if the whole world watched this, they would strike and this would be a serious matter, such as global warming.

That's it! It's not humane and like what Nick said, how can we let this happen? How can we stop it? What power do we as individuals or an 8th grade class have? I do know this, knowledge is power. Maybe enough people don't know about it?

Ms. Olson said...

Nick this is what I found about women in Sweden"
The Amnesty report concluded that over the past 15 years, incidents of violence against women in Sweden had spiraled upwards; the increase could not be explained away as merely a greater willingness by women to report such incidents to the police.

The number of police reports filed for assault against women increased by 40 percent during the 1990s, according to the Swedish National Council for Crime Prevention. In 1990, the number of assaults was 14,000; in 2003, it was 22,400, and in half of those cases the attacker was intimately involved with the woman.

An estimated 16 women a year are killed by their husband or partner, and only a fraction of the cases involving assaults, rape, a breach of a restraining orders or ongoing abuse are prosecuted.

The Amnesty report underscored that most incidents of violence against women continue to go unreported. In addition, the network of battered women's shelters is deeply frayed, with only about 150 of the 289 municipalities in Sweden operating shelters. Those open for business rely on volunteer workers."

FYI this is the most under reported crime in the world.

why are women treated so badly over the years? how come human kind has thought that a female life is worth less than males life?
yes i would have to agree with everyone else that women are treated very badly in Pakistan, getting tortured for man's will.
women in Pakistan faces are burned by their husband because their husband is putting a claim on her saying "she is mine no one is allowed to touch her without my permission." many people's response to that is it says so in Koran. Do not believe that! The Koran has no statement that means woman are allowed be treated badly for man's will. The Koran states that the man is always head of the family no matter what. if a man's wife is cheating on the man has the right to give woman a punishment and kill the other man. so the Arab world with a majority of the Islamic religion, studies The Koran. humans might have misunderstood and thought that since the men is the head of the family and he is allowed to punish the women if she does a sin, the man think "o.k I'm going to make sure she is not going to be able to do a sin." s they burn there wife's faces so they don't appear pretty to other man. people later started to think that its a natural thing that women are going to do a sin, it suspected that women are going to do sins; such as showing part of her body to a other man, looking at a other man straight in his eyes.
on of the greatest tortures done is circumcising a girl who is starting her period. i will explain about that in my next comment.

oh my gosh,
seeing this opened my eyes to a completely different world. Its not the one we see everyday. We are the few fortunates in this world that rarely experience or hear of people who experienced something of the amplitude. Our parents try to shield us from the horros of this world but lately for myself and others, they have stopped. We realise that not everyone can return home to a loving family, some people dont even have a home. In our world, things seem good, we never go into the slums and see the desperation. a site with alot of information on this desperate subject is

http://www.marxist.com/Asia/women_in_pakistan.html

It is only text but it talks of serious sybjects and is not for the faint of heart.

What is happening is not for the faint of heart either. The women are abused to such a thurough extent, if they are lucky enough to get a divorce, noone will marry them. Some "husbands" if they even deserve the title, burn their wives so she wont cheat on him. What the heck!!!!! that wont stop her from cheating, itll stop her from living! The societies in which these happen are strict on self respect so when she got she would, even though she probably wore aa veil, would be ashamed of her appeareance.
to comment on semhars digits" 9 women killed daily" that is horrrible. pathetivc, engrossing, disturbing, repulsive. I could go on forevrer but I won. not today.
to answer johanna's question. If I were a pakistani woman, after being abused, raped, beaten, I would stand up for myself. Odds are, the man will kill me, but what could be worse thant this living, excuse my french, hell. The wife is not allowed to divorce so death is the only possible escape. It might sound weird to some people, but that is my opinion.
To answer Semhar's question:
I think the reason that men do this is tradition and religion. For years and years the men have been told that they are superior to women, that women are there for them, and that when a woman is "unhonorable" i use a quote because their version of honorable scares me in a way. Anyway, if women are unhonorable, most of the men believe it to be a sin and to rid them of the sin, they must be beaten. This is vicious and pathetic, but so many years of , brainwashing in a way, is hard to reverse. Since most of the world stands by, the men still think it right, sometimes they might change their mind but once they have been preached to again and again, their mind changes for the worst.
I would like to use the example of this wonman in pakistan, who last year, was raped and held gostage for five days, violated continuously. When she managed to escape, the police arrested her for being without a man in public, when she told her hucband and the police what happened, they blamed her for cheating on him and didnt even care to go find the rapist. They sentenced her to 700 lashes. She died the next day, suicide.
So , to answer nick's question, how in heaven's name can we let this happen, we should be ashamed. It might be hard but we will make it. So my question is:how can a government continue to allow this to happen, under years of pressure from the rest of the world? Do they simply not care?

Unknown said...

To answer omars question, i dont think that everybody knows what is going on. Foe eg, i bet if you would interveiw some teenagers or even adults in the U.S or places in Europe that are safer, nobody would have any idea about what was going on in pakistan, or the general middle east. One of the biggest problems is ignorance, people need to be made aware of what goes on outside their own country. Like,i lived in Pakistan for four years and my mum worked n afghanistan for a long time, i guess you could say that the exposure was inevitable. Or, the possibility of all the horrible things that happen is too much for people to take, so they have a choice on whether they want to know or not or as you put it the faint hearted. Th second biggest problem is changing peoples perspective. it is SO HARD to get someone to see sense if they think their right, and somtimes the case is that they wont try to change because of pride. i also dont know how the government can allow this to happen. Maybe its corrupt? there are reports of police raping women who report raping. imagine having nowhere to turn. Or maybe he government doesnt have as much control over the population as they think they do?

I was disgust by the videos on YouTube, it was horrible. I saw a bunch of them before eating dinner, and I totally lost my appetite. It is so horrible that this can happen, that women are treated like animals. It shouldn´t happen. I think that it is tradition. If my father would teach me ever since I was born that women are less worth, then I would still believe that when I grew up. I don´t know how to stop this, but I want to. It makes me sick. And people from other countries cant just run in and stop all of it, it wouldnt work. It would be war. You have to somehow teach ,peacefully, the men the human rights.
Here is a video I found:

Warning: if you do not want to know about the circumcising of women don't read this message.it contains mature words and is not suggested for children under the age of 13.
PS: Sorry Ms. Olson if you think this is inappropriate for your blog.

the circumcising of women is a brutal torture done for men. this mostly happens to girls at the age when hey start their period.
why this happens is terrible this is done for the man but women actually have the right to say no to this, so why do most of them say yes. they don´t say it is mostly their mother or aunt that makes the decision (its done for culture).
this process is very simple and painful;
when the mother/aunt brought them to the doctor(which is a male!) the nurses force her legs open. which exposes the vaginal area. the doctor has a sharp knife(which probably isn't sterilized). the doctor puts his hands int the vagina and opens it to about 10cm. after that he has to cut out the area (i don't know the name but that part is important for women to give birth, if they don have that part they could die from blood loss) the separates the skin from the passage.
this is brutally done in most of the Islam world.
I apologize for people who read it and feel disgusted for read, but i flt this was a big part how women are treated in the Arab world.

i totally agree with what you said. I mean exatcly why do men treat women like dirt? I mean both men and women are the same in a way, they're both human and individuals. If God was meant to create men and women in an equal way, than why is it that women are treated this badly? I mean I definitly hope this will change!!

Unknown said...

I think that extremely wrong.

In my country I don't think that women are misstreated like other countries Because in Congo a long time ago in certain villages, women had their own job and man had their own job too. Men had to go hunt some animals and then women had to wait their husbands and make the food at home but in this time women wasn't treated very badly but there were one thing that women couldn't do; men didn't want women to eat chiken and eat all the food that men liked because men thought that if a woman was eating a chiken, men will cut their hair and will get off of their head. But now women can eat every thing that men eat because they saw that their rules of falling hair didn't work. In Congo Women are inportant in the family and they are playing an inportant role in the family because in the past they were going to settle feed and was taking good care of the children's education and is the same thing in the present, men are going to work and women stay at home to prepare food. So I don't know why women have to be treated in a bad way if they are inportant in our lives.

My parens said that: if you compare the africa(Congo)to the Europe for example, you will see that in Congo women are working at home for their family but in Europe some women have to work and get a job like their husbands and that not good because if there were a family and the man is working from 10-20hours a day and for the woman is the same thing, you will see that if the children came back from the school there will be no one in the house and the children have to call fast food and that not good because nobody is at home to take care of the children. So as Congo don't wante to do that, they are trying to be a family who love each other and even if they want to devorse they are always thinking of their children's futur.

So my question is:
Why men are treating women like that without thinking how it will be if women was revolting against them even if they don't have the right to do that because if there wasn't women in the world I don't know how that is going to be.Man will be alone and without them there wouldn't be families and stuff.

Has it always been women in pakistan being treated this horrible?

Why don't big major people stand up in say something?

If it is that horrible why dont people take big action and stand up for what they beleive in?

oh my god!! i saw those videos on youtube! I actually cried!!
i think its very unfair. The saddest part of it was when the would be hanged and get acid poured on to them! I think that the world has to stick up for these people! This is giving a very bad impression to the Middle East. This is very sad. I also saw the video about the 12 year old girl getting tortured by a knife and being beaten by her own husband!! HER HUSBAND! I think somebody has got to solve this problem with women being tortured. My mom also saw this video with me and she was crying too.

I also agree with the answer that Semhar gave to Johanna. It's in their religion that the man has more power than the lady.

This is also very sad for the children who are getting married and rapde and, etc. When they were like about 6 years old they dreamed that they would have a fair marriage and polite husband and being famous or rich, but now they are being raped and tortured.
Aren't men and woman supposed to be treated equally??? This is so unfair and some people have no idea that this is appening today. A young girl could be getting raped right now!!!

I just want to say that there has got to be a change, but there has got to be nicer men in the Middle East and around the world...

Yonas M said...

I KNOW, RIGHT TAYLOR!
somebody has really got to do something about this. But just imagin if there was a war on women rights? It would be a good thing, but look at the pros and cons. There will be more pros than cons because mostly in history when poeple fought for rights, they usually succeeded. Pakistan treated women fairly a long time ago, but not now! The war that is happening right now in the Middle East probably led to the violence to women. Pakistan and other countries are facing a tough time right now. There is a lot of violence.

You should also think on what the middle east is going through right now.....maybe those things are leading to violence against women in Pakistan...

Sorry for not posting before.

I made my research and my conclusion is that the treatment for women in Pakistan is just NOT acceptable. They get abused, raped and even killed by their husbands. From my research, I also discovered that Pakistan is especially an extreme case for women.
When I read this and saw all these videos on youtube (by the way they were so extremely sad) I felt all this was so distant from me, my life. What can we do?
Just as ms olson's question, I think knowledge IS the power. Getting to know all this and support NGO's fighting for women's rights in Pakistan is the minimum we can do.
Like julia said, it could be your mom or sister, and we are just SO lucky to have been born in our countries. Some countries are poor, others are rich, but the worse thing to do is treat your citizens in such an awful way.

I so agree with Semhar, arranged marriage has A LOT to do with this. Men feel that their wives are their posession, and that's just NOT acceptable.

Like moise, I think this is VERY wrong. I so hope the situation of women in Pakistan gets better, but its been going on for ages.
Its extremely sad.

Spain is for Europe a BAD example of treatment for women. SO many women die form hands of their couples, mostly husbands.

Senegal luckily is not an EXTREME islamic ountry were women wear chadrs and veils that cover up their faces. I dont hear that often national news here as I did in Spain (where around 2 women die a week from hands of their couples), but I dont think it is as bad as in other african/islamic countries.

I was very surprised Sweden, a Scandinavian country actually had those rates of raping or abusing. Its very sad but true, women in the world are badly treated, and I think everyone deserves respect and having the right to divorce from someone who is abusing from you. Pakistan doesnt have these rights for all citizens.

The websites posted were interesting AND alarming. I checked out Taylor's websites, Omar's and Jonatan's and ALL of them took me to the same idea:
equal treat, respect and freedom. BASIC RIGHTS FOR ALL HUMANS.
Why will some countries, governments and citizens just refuse to follow them?

I have seen this video...! You guys, do you have seen it? It is absolutely incredible that things like this can happened in 2008, isn’t?
Of course, I can understand that around the world, people have different history, different culture, and different way of thinking. Not so far, in my family for instance, sometimes (only?) I don not agree with my sister or my parents…
But…
We cannot accept human being have to live in fear and pain!!
We can not accept people are rapped!
We can not accept people are prosecuted!
Can you believe that people are killing others, just because they just feel like doing such things? Just because they feel others are out of honour???

Don’t you think those manners are coming out directly from the middle age?

Definitely not! We can not accept these horrors!

My dad told me that his grand father and the people during Second World War were fighting against Nazis…He told me about this war…We can not accept such things happen again

And I've seen the video of a 12 years old girl which had a knife in her hand because of her husband and she said next time he will kill her
That's Horrible!!!

I am agree with you Kevin, why people treat women like that just because they fell like doing bad things!!!
So Kevin what do you think that the world can do to not let things like that happen again?
And what the war was about, was it just a normal war or it was relate to how women in Pakistan treated?
